The 2010 BoatPittsburgh.com River Trip / Float Trip
Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Every river trip we take seems to be better than the last.  They somehow just get better and better.  However, last year’s float down the Kiski River was a blast and we were overwhelmed with requests to organize it again this summer.  In case you missed it last summer check out the photos
The basic idea is that all of the boats anchor in the Kiski River.  Saturday morning we will “ferry” everyone from the boats to shore where they will load onto busses with their deflated tubes or rafts.  (Don’t worry, we have several volunteers stay behind to watch the boats while everyone is on the float trip.) The busses will then take everyone about 3 miles up the Kiski River and drop us off where where we will blow up the tubes while enjoying a picnic lunch before launching as one big group and float down the Kiski River back to where the boats are anchored.

A $25 per person fee covers the bus trip, picnic lunch, and we will provide the air pumps to blow up the tubes.  The fee will also cover drinking water and a generous amount of adult beverages to enjoy during the float back down river.  Unfortunately this is an adult only trip and we are not allowed to transport any pets on the bus.

Rendezvous about 1 mile up the  Kiski River (Allegheny River MM 30) before dark.  All boats will raft-up and anchor for the night.  Call the “Raft-master” on VHF channel 68 for anchoring/rafting instructions.

Saturday, July 31, 2010

9:00 AM - Ferry will begin taking people to shore.  All participants must be ready to board the ferry at that time.  All tubes must be deflated so that they can fit on the bus.

11:00 AM – Lunch will be served while participants blow up inner tubes and rafts.

12:00 PM – Launch from picnic site

5:00 PM – Arrive back at boats.  Dinner (and any other meals other than lunch that is provided) is the participants responsibility.

Sunday, August 1, 2010

11:00 AM – Pull up anchor and head home

First and Foremost:  Please remember that we have done everything in our power to appease all types of boaters and all types of boats.  We encourage all boaters from the area to join us.  If you are a few locks up on the Monongahela or down the Ohio, meet us whenever you can.  If you are a few locks past the Kiski on the Allegheny, come and see us anyways!  Invite friends and others that you dock with.

Conflicts:  If you boat in the area near the Kiski River and you would like to join us but don’t need/want lunch or the bus ride feel free to meet us at the launch site near Leechburg.

Weather:  This is a rain or shine event.  We will only cancel the float trip in the case of thunder and lightening.  If severe thunderstorms occur we will bring the food and beverages to where the boats are anchored so everyone can enjoy them and we will just have to settle for a large raft-party.

The Locks / River Charts:  If you are a novice boater and would like help in going through the locks contact us and we will do our best to make sure you are comfortable with locking through.  Trust us, after you go through once you will quickly get the hang of it.  Click here for all you need to know about Locking Through.  Also, click here for a link to river charts of the Allegheny River.

Flotsam / Jetsam:  There are no scheduled Lock closures during this time.  We should not have any major delays at the lock.  Although this is a good thing, some of our fondest river trip memories were made while waiting two hours to lock through.

Reservations:  The first people to make reservations and make their payment in full will be given first priority.  The BoatPittsburgh.com staff will be at the Oakmont Regatta this weekend.  We will accept payments then if you are in the area.

RSVP:  We need to order food and make bus arrangements so you must…
