Beat That Cabin Fever; Go South To A Boat Show
Monday, March 03, 2008

This is the time of year every boater in Western Pennsylvania dreams of warm sunshine, gentle breezes, and hanging out on the boat with good friends and family. Unfortunately, reality leaves us with grey skies, rain, and only memories of boating. To help get rid of that cabin fever, go check out some boat shows in a warmer climate.

Some staff members from BoatPittsburgh.com recently did just that. We headed down to Savannah, Georgia to the Savannah International Boat Show. The weather, boats, and town were all more than we hoped for.

As we arrived in Savannah, the sun was shining and the temperatures were in the low seventies. This made for a pleasant ferry ride over from River Street in the Historic District over to the Convention Center on the other side of the Savannah River.

As we approached the convention center we knew we were in for a treat as new yachts ranging in size from 40 feet up to 65 feet greeted us as they sat in the water tied up to the docks just outside of the Convention Center and the adjacent resort.

Fishing boats were definitely the focus of the show. The indoor part of the show was dominated by center console boats in all sizes. There were also several booths with vendors selling everything from charts to custom radar arches.

After we made our way through multi-million dollar yachts, we then took the ferry back over to the Historic District and sampled the Savannah Nightlife. Although we were a few weeks early for their famous St. Patrick’s Day celebration, there was still plenty to do and see. River Street and Bay Street are both lined with great restaurants and pubs. The seafood we sampled was everything one would expect from a city so close to the shore.

The only downside to the trip was the return flight to Pittsburgh and the several inches of snow that greeted us. However, because of our visit we did get rid of that cabin fever. Click here to check out other boat shows going on around the country.
