Light Up Night 2011 Enjoyable By Land or Water
Sunday, November 13, 2011
With the mild fall weather, some boaters may be considering a trip to Pittsburgh for the annual Light Up Night Celebration on Friday, November 18th. For many hardcore boaters this will be the last trip of the season. Whether you come by boat or by land, it is worth the trip to Pittsburgh to see boats of all sizes decorated for the holidays. The several paddle-wheelers that usually make the trip will be sure to add a bit of nostalgia to the evening.
If you plan on coming by boat, here are some things you might need to know:
- Check out the official Light Up Night Website for event times and locations. Two fireworks displays and the Clemente Bridge Party look to be the highlights of the evening.
- If you are traveling down river on the Allegheny, remember that Locks 2, C.W. Bill Young (Lock 3) and Lock 4 will be operating from 8 AM to Midnight daily. These locks are NO longer open 24/7.
- The following river closures will be in effect for the fireworks displays:
1. Allegheny River Mile 0.6 to 0.8 (Full river closure): The Coast Guard hereby gives notice that the Captain of the Port Pittsburgh has established a temporary safety zone for the Light Up Night fireworks display from mile marker 0.6 to mile marker 0.8 on the Allegheny River, extending from bank to bank. All concerned traffic can contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM Channel 16 or the Captain of the Port at 412-644-5808.
The safety zone will enter into effect at 7:30 pm until 10:30 pm on Friday, November 18, 2011 (rain date November 19, 2011).
