Fans of Fair Weather
Tuesday, November 17, 2009
Although I love the city of
Pittsburgh, I have often wondered what it would be like to live and boat in the
south. I have read about it in magazines
and often thought it would be nice to have an extra few months at the end of
the season and get the chance to get started a little earlier in the
spring. Well it seems that we have been
lucky enough to get a little taste of the southern boating lifestyle right here
in Pittsburgh.
After what many boaters would
consider an unusually cool summer, Mother Nature has given us a bit of a
reprieve with above normal temperatures in the month of November. Temperatures in Pittsburgh normally average a
high of 51° and a low around 32°, but this season we have seen highs reach 70°. The 2009 averages for the first two weeks of
November were over 5 degrees warmer than normal.
Unfortunately, all of this nice
weather came a little too late. Many
marinas are already closed for the season and most boats have been winterized
and put away until next spring. For the
most part only houseboats and larger cruisers are still operating this time of
year; however, at the Point this past weekend, several boats of various sizes
were out and about and some people were even wakeboarding with wet suits
on.
For those of you that are disappointed
you missed out on some late season boating, there are some positives. Many of you were probably able to winterize
and cover your boats with a t-shirt on instead of wearing a jacket.
