    Mike,
if it has brakes, it must be inspected no matter what weight it carries. You can call to verify with any inspection station. I called push and pull in south park, since they specialize in trailers.

That's interesting... although it doesn't specifically say wether or not a 3,000lbs trailer has brakes, Pa. Code online says the following:

§ 175.4. Vehicles required to be inspected.

A registered vehicle moved upon a highway shall bear a valid certificate of inspection except for the following:

    (1) Special mobile equipment.

    (2) An implement of husbandry.

    (3) A motor vehicle being towed.

    (4) A motor vehicle being driven or a trailer being towed by an official inspection station owner or employee for the purpose of inspection.

    (5) A trailer having a registered gross weight of 3,000 pounds or less.

    (6) A motorized pedalcycle.

    (7) A vehicle being repossessed by a financer or collector-repossessor through the use of miscellaneous motor vehicle business registration plates.

    (8) A new vehicle while it is in the process of manufacture including testing, and not in transit from the manufacturer to a purchaser or dealer.

    (9) A military vehicle used for training by a private, nonprofit, tax-exempt military educational institution when the vehicle does not travel on public roads in excess of 1 mile and when the property on both sides of the public road is owned by the institution.

    (10) An antique vehicle.

Since I am married, does that make me an "implement of husbandry?" Thank god I don't need an inspection!!!

haha I would normally say it depends on who's doing the inspecting, but I can't say I've ever seen any good lookin' women working as inspection mechanics lol

I don't think this topic is becoming any less confusing. I did, however, have my single axel surge braked trailer inspected the other day for our trip to Kinzua. So i'm good either way!

Any trailer over 3,000gvw is required to have brakes on all axles in PA. Those under are not.

My car trailer is inspected, but my boat trailer is not. If they give me grief I will probably just take the brakes off. The trailer is registered right at the limit.

Just to clearify the law, if a trailer has a GVW of 3000 lbs. or higher OR has brakes (regarless of Weight) it must be inspected. I know some of you already said that, but no one said both and I though it might be confusing for new owners
Thats not what the code says. It says over 3000, and doesn't mention brakes.

Are you saying if my trailer is registered at 3000 and something is wrong with my brakes, I need to completely remove them to be legal?

I call the state police today, and they told me 3,000 and under do not need inspected even if they have brakes. They also said if the fish commissioin says you do, they need "retrained".
