So I am new to the pittsburgh area, currently reside in wexford, pa. I am looking for a spot to do some family boating. I just have a 19 foot wellcraft, want to take the wife and kids out and maybe water ski and just general playing around. Where are some good family friendly places?
welcome sbranscum,
head right down freedom road to route 65 the beaver river isnt too far away it has a few public docks,
many marinas to dine with curtosy docks.
if you havent been there its like a resort community.
but remember the beaver river is no wake so be kind to our boats as you explore.
just upstream on the ohio is a large ski friendly pool.
enjoy the summer
lil buggy.
You have lots of choices...I am in the Pittsburgh Pool and there is a good stretch on the Allegheny River for "playing" and there is also one on the Mon side. I assume you are trailering? There are launches on both rivers. There are several lakes that are within an hour or two but the river will likely be closest for you.
I'll be glad to give you more info...let me know what else you need...
Also, you mentioned you just moved here....I'm a Realtor and if you haven't found a home, let me know...I'll be glad to help...otherrwise see you on the river!

I appreciate you responding. We already are in a house, so sorry. What are the names of the lakes around here that allow motorboating and are decent size. Thnaks!
Welcome to the 'burgh. Shenango is a decent lake and is a short distance away. When I go there, I take the turnpike to I-376 West (Old Route 60). Follow that to Hermitage and you are there. Kinzua is about 2 1/2 hours North by Warren, PA. It is a nice, but a cold lake. Lots of coves to explore. Conneaut is supposed to be good, but I have never been there. Don't discount the rivers. They are a lot of fun, and it is easy to meet people. Good luck, and maybe we will see you out sometime.
seeing is how you live in wexford the closest water is
either the ohio at (the emsworth sewickly exit) of route79
1 lock and i believe 12 mi from the point
a smaller pool with 1 bar/restaraunt/curtosy dock
or go north to cranberry
hop on freedom road and head to the beaver river
2 locks from the point n i believe 25+ ? plus miles(gotta check) from the point
a larger pool with a few bar/restaraunt/curtosy docks
i guess south side is close but youll have to fight more traffic
but you get all three rivers, the point ,da concerts, more traffic.
when you consider all three of the rivers it is a long pool also and has more than a few bar/restaraunts/curtosy docks
it all depends on what you are lookin to do.
i am docked on the beaver and am very happy with the mix of tubing, fishing, enjoying fine dining, and people watching.
i guess i am partial though.
i plan on raftin up for the fireworks on the 2nd near the entrance to da beaver
lets try to represent boatpittsburgh.com n see just how long a string we can make
bet we could get some (best pics) entries to this years contest
We live in Wexford as well and can get to our marina in the Pittsburgh pool in about twenty minutes. When we use to trailer we would go down 79 south to the Glenfield public launch off of 65 on the Ohio. It is a smaller pool, but we had alot of good times there. That would take about twenty minutes as well, but you would have to lock through to get to Pittsburgh. Good Luck.
if you are looking for lakes, cheat lake wv is a aporx 13 miles long, 1 20min for wexford straight down 79 to 68 towards cumberland. if you are really looking to ski, board etc, there is more room on the lakes with less issues creating a wake. Yough lake is really nice too (in summerset, donegal area). I hit the river during the week on the allegheny, then the lake on the weekend. It seems there are more skiers, boarders at the lake and not as many large boats. hope this helps.
oh, nothing against the river, but we board, surf etc a lot and find it tough to keep away from marinas etc etc and we don't want to wake the docks, so we stay at the lake when the river is busy during the weekend
