Just dropped off my boat at Brady's for the first time - the underground tunnels are cool and the staff is nice. Only issue was I didn't bring a printout of the forum thread for the discount since I figured they wouldn't be picky about that, but turns out they would not give it to me without one.

Print one out and mail it, or wait a minute, maybe Gary did not post it on here yet?

    Hi guys,

Sorry we didn't get around to this earlier, but i wanted to personally invite everyone up again who is part of boatpittsburgh.com and give you a 10% discount on climate controlled storage at Brady's Bend Underground Storage this year. We really appreciate your business and are excited to see everyone again. I do have to ask that you print this email string out and take it with you when you come and then we can honor the discount.

Dirk, i will contact you shortly about your discount. Thank you for storing with us, i really appreciate it.

    Dirk,

I would print this exchange out and mail it to Brady's bend, I bet they adjust it for you.

Hi Guys ... I am new to the forum and new to boating. I just purchased a 2001 crownline of a buddy of mine who never used it. Fortunately for me I got it for a very good price and the boat is in great shape. Unfortunately for me I am getting it at the end of the season just in time to store it and winterize it. I did make reservations to store it in the controlled climate area at Brady's thanks to all the recommendations on here. It sure beats having the boat wrapped and sitting outside in the elements all winter so thank you all for the great information.

One question, what did you guys do to prepare your boats before putting it away for the winter? I was planning on the standard winterization but being in controlled climates im not sure its necessary? Any input would be great! I do plan on doing the annual maintenance in the spring to get the normal wear issues taken care of so for now im looking for information on keeping it safe during storage.

YMMV and other may do things a bit differently.

Pick and choose all that apply, the more of these things you get done now the less you have to do in the Spring, I prefer to get most of it done now.

    -Change your anodes
    -Pull your bilge plug
-Drain your outdrive and replace the oil, youtube has a great video
    -Change your engine oil
    -Clean your spark arrestor
    -Change spark plugs
-Clean your hull (great recipe on here, lysol and peroxide)
-I run mine on muffs to clean out the yucky stuff, some people run antifreeze in it too. In the cave it cannot freeze.
-Fog your engine, by running it and spraying fog oil into the carb, I do it until it's about to stall. Some people also remove spark plugs and spray the holes too.
-When we get to the cave we wipe down EVERY surface inside real quick, then I put the cover on loose so you have circulation. I've read where people have put their boat away wet, I would worry all winter, but that part of the cave has ventilation and it's dry. It's a very cool drive up there, we make a day out of it every year.
-Oh and put the bilge plug back in or we will get a good laugh come next May when you float her off the trailer. <JK>

Make sure your tank is less than 1/2 tank of gas or you will not be allowed in the cave, I lower my outdrive till it's about 6 inches off the ground once I park it, this takes the stress off of your bellows. You will also need to take the battery out before leaving the cave. Buy a cheap float charger, leave it on your battery all Winter.

When you are all done, kiss her goodbye till Spring, then spend the next 5 of hell and back up to that cave to get her out.

I would still winterize the engine, to prevent corrosion.

X2 on winterizing with antifreeze. Rust inhibitors are key.

    Real dumb question.

If I am going to winterize anyway, are there any real advantages to storing in the climate controlled area (vs. the unconditioned area)?

Never mind. I just talked to them. Mold risk and dust are the differences. I am going to take it there. $110 is worth not having to push the snow off it constantly and worry about weather or not I sufficiently winterized. I'll just give her a good coat of wax first.

One thing too, if you use your boat cover in the winter it would not last long so think of the cave as saving you money there. And what would a big tarp cost that only lasts a year or so anyhow.

The conditioned is by far the way to go.

Very Disappointed in Brady's Bend....called weeks ago, make a reservation and PAID a deposit. I got word this week my boat is ready to go up, called them and they somehow are "Full" for Saturday. I already PAID a deposit for a truck which i'm now going to lose. They WONT refund my deposit! Didn't know you had to call weeks in advance to freakin drop off an item. FRUSTRATED!

Yes, they run a shortened Saturday I think and they ask you to reserve a time in advance, I bet they probably had a large a lot of people taking their boats up this week.

Sorry it did not work out for ya.

I called yesterday and they had three time slots left. I had no idea you had to sign up for a time slot, so I guess I got lucky.

If I wasn't going to be out of town the following two weekends, I would let you have my slot. Seems that there should be something you could do.

Why do they have time slots anyway?
