I purchased a boat this past week from someone in Ohio. The guy I bought it from purchased the boat in PA and the title was signed to him (and Notarized) but never processed through the state because he lives in Ohio. I now have the original Pa title but I don't know what to do with it. Anyone have an idea how to re-title the trailer in PA?
thanks for your help. This is my first boat and I'm hoping this site can guide me along. It looks like it contains lots of great info.
You must have a signed bill of sale. Any notary can do the paperwork for you. I think the fees are 6.00 a year for non brake trailers, and 12.00 per year for larger ones with brakes.
I found out something interesting when I purchased the Mastercraft... not all states require that a trailer has a title, so we had to go through a lot of crap to find out if the trailer we bought (from Michigan) had a title or not and how to get it transferred (or newly created) in PA. I usually try to call the registration place to find out what I need and sometimes still end up having to get more info or documents and go back again. I'm just glad there are places to go that are NOT the DMV license centers.
Ya, there are a few states that don't title trailers. There still should be a certificate of origin with the trailer that can be signed over or (if transfering to PA) replaced by a PA title.
I just ran into a problem where I had a Certificate of Origin that was transfered in Ohio to four different people and there was no more room to transfer it to me. I went to the notary and we sent in the Cert. of Origin along with the (notarized) bill of sale. A few weeks later PennDOT sent back everything (less the deposited checks!!) and said the Cert. of origin needed to be transfered to me without any explanation on how to do so when there is no more room to do it. I called the car dealer I bought the trailer off of and they are going to send a notorized letter explaining why we couldn't transfer the Cert. of origin. Should be interesting!
Altvaters notary (ed) on route 60 in crafton, has all the answers, when in doubt. His computers are tied into the state, and he performs miracles when no one else can figure it out.
I agree with you both, I have dealt with them before. I just decided to go to Coraopolis to Doney's this time. Lesa is very nice and she is helping me with it. If this continues, I will go to Altvaters.
The sad part is I work for PennDOT!! All of the registration stuff is done out of Harrisburg.
