    Default Trip planning

What is the best way to plan out a trip? Figuring out distance, time, places to overnight, gas, etc?

Paper charts? Or do the chartplotters give you decent waypoints and data for the rivers?

Paper charts or a chartplotter with the river maps will work.
There is a book called quimby's, which has all river info in it. It lists marinas, gas, lodging, etc.
Any trip requires good planning. Fuel stops need to be calculated beforehand. Where you would like to visit and spend time, will dictate your stops.
You will meet many great people up and down these rivers.

I would recommend checking on the lock maintenance schedules to see if there are delays or any emergency unscheduled repairs going on at the locks before you start the trip. Also, have all the phone numbers of the places you are trying to stay and/or the gas docks you plan on using if necessary. Setting up good places to stop and stay the night is key but it is also about the trip itself for me. That is the main part I enjoy... also post where you are thinking of heading on this site and maybe others will have been there and know where to stay or where a good "beach" is to pull up and hang out.
