My point was, a new boater, while staying outside the minimum distance and remaining legal, may not know that he's breaching etiquette. Some people are just jerks.
I understand what you are saying about "new boaters" but that isnt a reason or excuse and it isn't etiquette. Its safe and smart boating. I have boated for many years and then decided to boat on erie for a summer. Even though I had experience, I researched, read and otherwise gathered info on how to be a safe boater even tho I was a "new" boater to lake erie. I assure lake u erie and the 3 rivers are like the pirates and major league baseball teams....no comparison...and that is kinda my whole point...someone saves a couple bucks....go's to the local boat store, buys a boat and is now "A boater"....of course not....ask any cop...not knowing the "law" is no defense....I think we agree...and not arguing...i just have no patince for A$$HOLES on the water...regardless of why they are A$$HOLES, they are still A$$HOLES and dangerous to all...
Understood. I think that some of these guys don't realize that boats above hull speed (which is typically around 6 knots) make wakes until they get on plane and any boat which can't pick its transom completely out of the water will never be completely on plane, which means that even going fast they are gonna throw a wake.
Chasing ducks? Geez. I thought that part of being on the water was appreciating life on the water, not mowing it down.
I grew up a sailor and didn't have a power boat until I was almost 40. It made me appreciate how nice the water is without the smoke, noise, fumes and wakes.
For some, being on the water is a different lifestyle. For others, it appears to be a chance to prove something that you couldn't prove on land.
you got to love the wakes we are getting from the coast guard state police river res because of G20. my boats power was ripped out of the side of my boat bolts and all and their are boats with fiberglass damage also
So, can you get them to pay for that? Seems to me this G-20 thing is causing all sorts of problems. Not just inconveniences, but actual damage to peoples property and lost wages. Is the city liable for any of it? Are the police liable for damage caused to boats by their wakes as a private citizen would be?
I don't see how they're getting away with this thing. It's on thing to have a conference here. But to have all these cops and armed forces running around in full riot gear actually preventing private citizens from going down public streets and rivers doesn't seem like it should be legal. Footage of the city right now looks like footage of Baghdad. Is this the picture of Pittsburgh that we want these world leaders to see? Not trying to turn this in to a political discussion, I'm speaking purely as an impartial citizen and now slanted towards one party or another.
hey nuthut
was down wed am and watched them crushing both of our marinas. i'm glad i was off and able to adjust ropes, fenders and add fenders where needed. i heard several boats bounced there keels off the docks and had fiberglass damage. good luck getting someone to pay for your damages.
Well there is another Steeler home game upon us tomorrow. I wonder how many people are going to blow thru the point because the No Wake Zone is no longer enforced. I guess it is time to break out the really big fenders. Let's hope tomorrow isn't too bad.
Get the air horns ready because we have another game on Sunday. We all know that there is going to be some a hole who plows through the point while we are all tied up for the game on Sunday.
Some people should not attempt to interrrup the law, e.g. JoeLeaphorn
Some of what you say is true -- most is not -- you need to read up on the laws - legal positions and a couple of case studies before giving out advice.
I wouldn't be surprise if you're not one of the people using provanties on the VHF radios or trying to yell at someone have way across the river for "waking me"
and if you are down at the crows nest or sharpsburg -- I might not be surprised if your one of the boats pulling a skier, tuber, or just swimming in the middle of the navigation channel at sunset near Lock 2 when no-one is able to see the skier or swimmers in the water.
I agree with netresult of what a boater should be -- trouble is as I get older I find that common sense is no longer common.
I was amazed at the amount of boaters, big and small that blew through the no wake zone yesterday before the football game. There were a few million dollars worth of boats there, all rocking away. Even if it wasn't a no wake zone, what happened to using some common courtesy towards fellow boaters??? Also, where is the fish commission on a day like yesterday??? They could have made a mint pulling the a-holes over!!!
We went to the game and walked up the river walk from the 6th street bridge and yes, they sure had a lot of buttheads waking folks yesterday. I felt bad for the boaters on the wall.
Looks like everyone was really having a lot of fun though.
It was a shame...about an hour before game time a guy came plowing thru in a regal with a green top...he killed everyone...and could have cared a less...its a shame 10% assh*oles ruin the goodwill of the 90% great people...and I actually had a guy try to come in sunday and tie to my boat...without permission...I was sleeping...the guy on the wall told him he couldnt tie there and the assh*le told him he didnt own the river...then he pulled away....the best part...if he would have come in and done what u r supposed to do...simply asked...I would have gladly let him tie up....he came in like it was his right to board my boat!!!! Clearly a 10%er!!!

We were on the wall since last Monday (the last spot)...When I arrived Sunday morning we had 4 boats tied up to us without permission. It ended being fine and they were fun to party with however screwed up the arrangement of the boat that was meeting up on Sunday.
I'm glad it worked out for you...however no one should ever tie to another boat without permission....not many people would be ok with that like you were...you are a better man than me! lol
I will say I was out last Saturday and it looked like the middle of summer with all the boats at the point. What was generally good to see that with all the boats tied up for the Steeler game the next day, most were still honoring the no wake zone, even though it was past October 1. I did see a couple go through includeing a Formula, that was booking. But mostly what I saw was good, leads me to believe there may be more then 10% of us that are "boaters" according to the definition above.
Just trying put put a spin on it at the end of the season. Right now I would be happy to be sitting at the Point getting waked!
