This 65' Hargrave design aluminium hull with custom superstructure caught fire here at Midway yesterday. It is absolutely amazing how fast this thing went up. Thank GOD she was diesel powered. The fire department deliberately sunk her to put the fire out.

Don't know what caused it yet, no one was aboard. Most likely it was electrical. From the series of photos I took, it looked like it started below decks. I only posted a few of the pics, I took well over 70 photos. The fire dept thought they had the fire out, but it was burning in the cuddy and took off again which then engulfed the stern in flames. If you look at the last photo, there was a hole burnt thru the hull on the port side which looked like point of origin to me. The fire did not go out until they actually sank the boat.

I feel so bad for these people. What a bad day! I hope they are able to get themselves back out on the water. If there were any way I could help, I would.
Oh man, only liability! Anything could happen I suppose. I guess they owned it outright but my boat loan isn't the only reason I have full insurance on my boat. That is a bummer to see.
Wow with a boat that big why would you not spend a few extra hundred bucks a year for full insurance?! Esp when docking all year with flood and such. Same thing happened to a guy i knew got a home equ Loan so they did not hold the title and he did not need full insurance until a flood and he lost a boat he spent 45,000 on just 9 month earlier and still owed 43500 on it live and learn i guess. I do feel so sorry for them and wish them the best that is so sad to see someone loose something so nice.

We do not have floods at this marina and there is no current to speak of. The docks here are fixed, not floating, the fluctuation of the water level is NEVER more than 4 inches. I can't answer for the owners as to the lack of full coverage but I do know the boat hasn't left the dock in a number of years and they did not live aboard.

KABOOM! the shriek of ripping fiberglass and then the soft tinkle of raining glass fragments. The sight of smoke, frantic cries of "FIRE! CALL 911!" Feet pounding on the docks as fire extinguishers are located, and delivered to the fire. The owner is found, he's in shock, but he cries out for the mechanic who is seriously burned. A neighbor takes action to get him to a hospital. Sirens are getting closer, the trucks are coming......"GET IT OUT FROM UNDER THAT ROOF!" A boat has fired up her engines and tows the now just smoldering boat to a safer location, where the firemen can be sure it's out. The kitty was found later, singed, freaked out, but OK.
This was caused by gasoline fumes in an enclosed cabin boat. The mechanic was working in the engine compartment. The earth shattering kaboom was so powerful it lifted the superstructure off the deck. It blew out ALL the windows, and some of the windows in the boat in the adjacent slip. The interior salon is demolished, the headliner torn. The mechanic will be OK, he has some seroius burns and will be in the hospital for a few days.

Wow, that is some scary stuff. I know I forget sometimes that this stuff CAN happen and get careless. This is a good reminder for all of us. Thank God nobody lost their life.
That is amazing... I think all too often people jump in their boats and turn on the blower and are like "1, 2, ok lets go!" I've done it before and its scary what would happen if there were fumes built up in there.
It was scary, damn scary, and it is a possibility on ANY boat. I heard later the cabin windows WERE open, and it still did that much damage. That was not a flimsy little fiberglass, conveyer belt, mass produced boat either. It was a 1963 steel hull 44' Chris Craft Roamer. With boating season just around the corner, we ALL need to be reminded of safety precautions. Boating and getting in a hurry, or taking shortcuts do not mix.

This happened on 9/11/2008, I was fishing near the shoreline at Lake Raystown Resort when I saw a black plume of smoke. Within minutes, it erupted into a towering inferno. It doesn't take long. Fortunately it was in the middle of the week... No one was injured, 4 houseboats were destroyed, 2 jetskis, the dock, and massive damage to other boats. Pictures in my profile.
