Default Courtsey to other boaters a +

The general nautical rule is 100 feet but this needs a little clarification. Creating a pretty good wake 100 feet out from a marina is not going to win you many friends. No matter the size or shape of the vessel... the boater should look behind them at the wake they are creating and the affect they are having on those around them.

i notice that the pwc's leaving the fuel dock near my slip generally just gun it and leave the whole dock rocking in a wake. the newer pwc's are huge and i don't think their riders are aware of how damaging their wakes are (at least i hope they don't). i do think it's a case of a few ruining it for all though as most pwc's are courteous and they are a blast to ride.
Here lies the body of Mary Lee; died at the age of a hundred and three. For fifteen years she kept her virginity; not a bad record for this vicinity.

Does this look like 100 feet?

Haha. It was just part of a ski show.

All in all, Jet Skiers in Pittsburgh seem to be pretty good about respecting the distance rule. At least a lot better than Florida. When I lived there, I used to have to spray (while riding my wakeboard) Jet Skiers all of the time to get them to back off. I have live up here for two years now, and not one Jet Skier has come that close yet.

Glad to see people trying to spread awareness.. Even the guy that yells from Peggys.. We should all yell at those that need it!

I want to take a guess that those that cause the trouble are probably not members of this site...

Yes everyone can help spread safety tips and info... There are some people that are unsafe on the water because they don't care, but a good percentage of boaters just don't know the safest practices. For the latter, spreading the word is the solution.
