Are there any groups or clubs that meet up and just go out and jet ski together? I'm new to the hobby and would like to surround myself with veterans that can show me what to d, not to do, and th good places to enjoy my ski
I don't know of any clubs or groups in the Pittsburgh area, but here are a couple of tips for you:
1. Don't go near or follow boats with skiers. For some reason Jet Skiers in this area will follow directly behind our skier. Jet Skis do not have breaks, if the skier falls, you can't stop.
2. This is my personal favorite to do on a Jet Ski (it requires that you have a reverse). Go about 35 mph. Let off the gas, flip the reverse and then floor it.
Yea, that sounds like pretty common sense. I guess my biggest point of nervousness is learning where the no wake zones are (I imagine the signs are much easier to miss on the water than on the road), where you should and shouldn't take your ski, unwritten rules, etc....
Signs for the no-wake at the point are on the bridge columns. If you are on the Mon or Ohio coming to the point, it is the only bridges you see looking at the point. The other is before PNC Park coming down the Alleghany.
For Pittsburgh, the signs on the water are the only signs you can read/see before you passed them.

I run Pittsburgh Watercraft Performance. We are a jet ski repair shop, and also organize jet ski rallies and races. We also have boats and do many things on the rivers - if you like to join us or just need some pointers contact us at 724-275-7335. My name is Aaron Mock.
Grantz - thats very helpful, thank you
Mock - Coincidentally, I just dropped my jetski off at your shop this morning! I'll get the scoop from you when I stop by to pick it up!
I can vouch for Aaron, he's great people, he put an ebay motor in one of my Sea Doo GTSs and blocked off my oil pumps and they run like a charm.
Don't EVEN think of anyone else but the folks in Cheswick, Aaron is honest as the day is long.

shallow yes. there are some tricky spots, but it is so much fun. not much boat traffic. just canoes and small fishing boats, i launch in mckeesport. then go up towards buena vista. 30 to 45 min taking your time. up there you start to get in to some current, its fun. i ride everywhere. mostly down there. we also have a cruiser we dock down at mckeesport. in fact the avatar pic is from boston.
We have gone up the yough on the jet skis a few times. It does get shallow, so I wouldnt go super fast when you start getting past Boston. We have gone up to as far as Buena Vista then head back. I believe there is one train bridge not to far from Mckees Point that you want to stay to the right or you may run aground. Its a nice ride because its so calm and scenic, but I dont know if I recommend going too far up there.
i ride there alot, more than anywhere else. you are right about the bridge. i have seen a lot of people smash ground. i am gonna someday run real far like west newton or that other little town "sutersville" i think. there was a guy one time who said they almost made it to ohio pyle. how true that is i dont know. once you get up towards buena vista it gets crystal clear so avoiding rocks is not too hard as long as your not haulin ass.
