Default Questions about upgrading to a 32 ft boat

I am thinking about upgrading my boat. Currently I have a 21 ft cuddy cabin but I am thinking about getting something around 30 ft. I see a 32 ft flybridge in Erie I like but I have some questions about going to a larger boat. Hopefully some of the people with boats this size can help.

    1. The boat I am looking at does not have a trailer. I would like a trailer for the boat. Mainly for winter storage and being able to pull the boat if the Ohio floods. Are there any recommended places to look for a trailer?

    2. Are there any places around that will rent a heavy duty truck? The boat weight is 12000 lbs. I have a Ram 1500 and that is outside of the towing range. It might make it up and down the ramp but I don't want to risk it?

    3. Do most people with boats this size pull them out over the winter? My boat club closes down and pulls all the docks.

    4. If I go this route I will need to get the boat transported here. The one I am looking at is on Lake Erie. Has anyone had any experience with boat transports?

    5. Has anyone used a marine surveyor that can take a look at a boat? I would want this to be my last boat purchase for a while and don't want to get junk.

That is all for the time being. As I think about this more I will probably have more questions. Thanks for the information.

I can't answer all your questions but there are a couple of good surveyors in the Pittsburgh area, one is Ed Gibson. He is sams and nams certified and does a great job.

You also have to watch the beam. Over a certain width you need permits to tow, legally.

What brand are you looking for. There are some clean ones locally.
Most people with bigger than average boats use their marina for services like in and out, storage, etc. Many marinas offer complete services.
As for the truck, i doubt you will find someone to rent you a truck. I would use a reputable transport company to get the boat here. Joe miller is very reputable, and you can get his number from millers marine.
If you are looking for a clean spotless 32 bayliner with low hours, there is one sitting at p and l boat sales. The owner is very interested in making some one a good deal. Let me know if interested.

What part of Lake Erie? When i was looking for my boat, i found the best place was up by Port Clinton/Sandusky area. there are a ton of fresh water boats up there and always way more for sale than what Pittsburgh area would ever have. In Pittsburgh you have a limited supply of boats and only a handfull of dealers. Supply and demand would dicate a better chance of getting a better deal there. If you are looking that direction I can provide you what boat and engine surveyor I used along with who transported my boat to Pittsburgh.

I don't see anything wrong with buying something local either. would save you some money transporting it. could easily spend 800-1000 bucks for transportation from lake Erie.

Doubt if there are many 32 footers that have a legal beam. Most brands of boats over 26 foot are over 9 foot or more wide.

Yes the boat I am looking at is a wide load. I understand all that goes in to moving items like this. For work I currently have 14.5 ft wide items going from Oregon to Texas.

I was wondering about the truck for put in / pull out only. I will hire a professional with insurance to bring it that distance if I pursue the boat. Currently I dock at one of the smaller marinas outside of the Pittsburgh Pool on the Ohio.

The boat is located in Cleveland. Any recommendations on haul companies and surveyors will be welcomed.

The boat I am looking at is a Carver. I did not see the bayliner at P&L. I will take a look.

Anything over 102" wide requires a oversize permit from the DOT.They want a million dollars in liability ins. with ther name on the policy for one way tows. That doesn't include there cost for the permit. I have a 30ft FourWinns (trailer and boat) about 13000 I pull it with a 07 Tundra to Wampum and back for storage and the locals, not that there dumb they don't bother me. I dock at Bridgewater and live in Ambridge. My truck pulls it as if isn't there. The problem with towing something that large is the stoping distance. The larger the boat the more to take care of and the more you are held captive to the marinas.
