Will a Cobra outdrive handle a 300hp 5.7 or 383 350hp in an engine upgrade? Price is not that much of a difference from what I can see online at the various reman. engine dealers.. $400 to $500 dollars. It currently has a 5.7 260hp. If I have to invest the money, I would like a little stronger engine and better fuel consumption. I am not opposed to investing in a new outdrive as well, but if I can, I would like to do the engine this year, outdrive next as I would like to stay married and try to get some boat time in this year.
I dont know what the hp rating is? But if you were planning to do a motor this year and switch makes in drives next year i would take a step back and look at your options. Im not sure but if you replace the motor this year you prob have to pull it again next year to put a different engine coupler and transom mount in with a different drive system? I know you can buy a merc motor and drive combo> not sure if volvo has the same thing and i think with that you get motor engine coupler transom mount and drive( prob not on the cheaper side though)!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Check the major boating sites for used motors and drives. Many choose to go from gas to diesel, and there are packages out there very reasonable. Not sure if i would be breaking the rules by posting some of the sites, but you can pm me if you would like the info.
Thanks for the input! I was just wondering if the cobra would take a 320hp motor. I was figuring staying with the omc, but there is company out there that does a conversion kit from omc to merc and the drive is not that expensive from them. I made a few calls and found that the cobra will handle on the upper end 350hp but that is pushing it. I am told 300-320 will be ok as I am thinking of a new vortec 5.7 from an online marine engine dealer.
Going to get moving on this soon as I would like to get some boat time in this year.
Thanks!
Not that the folks here aren't knowledgeable, but if I were you, I'd ask that question over on the Bayliner Owners Club forum. A few guys there really know their stuff. One guy in particular, Rick, posts as 2550bounty, or something like that. He REALLY knows these boats and is very helpful. I had him on speed dial last year when I was doing my engine swap. I'd call, he'd give advice and it was spot on every time. I even bought several of the parts I needed from him. He specializes in Volvo, but he's pretty experienced.
Ok, yeah I remember reading some of those posts over there. I think I have it figured out however, got a brand new drop in Vortec 350 located.. they assure me the outdrive will handle the HP increase. Going from 260 to 315. I am told its not he HP but the Torque the drives cant handle, but this motor is sold as an upgrade to existing outdrive. So I think I will be ok. Its not cheap but I dont want to buy something used and be in this same spot next year or year after. Now.. IF we can get some good weather I might be able to get working a little better so that I have a chance at half the season this year.
Thanks for all the input!
A lot of it has to do with how you drive it. If you slam the throttle and spend a bunch of time in the air on waves you can break any drive. I`m sure if what you have now is holding up, a few more hp. isnt going to kill it. Even with 315 hp. your tq. #`s wont be that much bigger....50#`s or so. If I was in your "boat" I`d buy that motor, and a cheap used spare drive as insurance because you usually dont break what ya have a spare one of! seeya on the water!
I have an se 106 (merc alpha one) with 1.5 gears and 352 hp with 371 tq and it is only rated for 300 hp mines holding up fine with the hammer down Just make sure you prop right to keep your WOT RPM to factory spec's. Never let your drive over rev, mine did and cracked the paint on the drive
I use Amsoil in my drive, and have a drive shower...... sounds like that might help you Flapjaw if you were burning paint!! I run a B-1 XZ / Imco and lots of power and so far all I seem to have hurt is the boat.
